UPDATE- Maternity leave 2013
Melissa Millar, owner of MOTIVA Wellbeing and Fitness is currently on partial maternity leave. She is working a few hours per week including one group fitness class on Monday nights at Knox Presbyterian Church.

Fitness company flexes muscles
Halifax: It’s a time of expansion, growth and fulfillment for Melissa Millar, the owner/operator of Motiva Wellbeing and Fitness, the fitness company based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The instructor is riding the wave.
Motiva opened its metaphorical doors for business in January 2010, when Millar returned from a two-year, award-winning sabbatical in New Zealand. “I had been in a management position at the YMCA and was ready to get back to hands-on teaching,” she explains. “I took those two years to recharge my own batteries and create a comprehensive business plan for myself for the next chapter of my life. Motiva Wellbeing and Fitness is the result.”
The past 21 have been all about re-establishing a foothold in the fitness industry in HRM. Millar runs classes at locations in Hammonds Plains, Dartmouth, Halifax and has a number of corporate and personal training clients. She is a popular ZUMBA® instructor and has just added YOGAFIT® to her spectrum of classes. She is now offering these classes in Dartmouth.
“The business grew at a fantastic rate and the class participants and clients have been loyal and enthusiastic. What more could I ask for?” says Millar.
Since her return to Halifax, Millar has participated in the annual Bust A Move event for Breast Health. She’ll be back in 2012, this time as one of the Lead Instructors for the day.
“It’s a thrill to be a part of such a vital event as Bust-A-Move. Dancing with Paula Abdul last year was a dream come true,” grins Millar, who has a degree in dance from York University, in Toronto.
“This year will see Motiva even more involved, with a team participating in the marathon fitness session. I am excited to be the lead instructor for the boot camp/kick boxing section of the day!”
All of the instructors and creative team are already in rehearsal for the event, which is scheduled to take place March 24, 2012.
Millar was also recently chosen to be a “Maritime Summit Shop Fitness Advocate” representing the new store and the North Face brand. This development takes the company up a gear.
“Having a partnership with such a great store is a fantastic fit. The North Face brand is perfect for the work that my class participants do.” Watch for Motiva running a boot-camp style class at the store, 1559 Barrington Street, very soon!
Millar is making some time in her busy Fall schedule for the return of a popular Motiva event, Fat Burn Fiesta; a fitness and nutrition workshop and food drive. Supporting FEED NOVA SCOTIA with food donations and $2 from every registration going to the organization, the Fiesta is a motivational event, with participants engaged in an afternoon of activity and learning.
The Fat Burn Fiesta is Saturday, Nov 5, 1:30pm at Knox Presbyterian Church, Halifax.
With so much going on at Motiva Wellbeing and Fitness, it’s safe to say that Millar’s return from New Zealand with that business plan was a great move.
